Yes, your Starbucks Rewards Stars will expire 6 months after the end of the month in which they were earned. According to the Starbucks Rewards terms and conditions:

“Unless otherwise noted, Stars are automatically added to your account within twenty-four (24) hours of your eligible purchase and expire six (6) months after the calendar month in which such Stars were earned. For example, if you earn Stars on December 15, 2020, they will expire on July 1, 2021.”

Once expired, there is no way to reinstate your Starbucks Rewards Stars.

Exceptions to the Expiration Policy

Currently, there is only one exception to the Starbucks Rewards policy on when stars expire. Stars earned through the following card do not expire:

  • Starbucks Rewards™ Visa® Card

However, if you close your card account, your points will expire 6 months after the end of the month in which your account was closed.

Other Options than Starbucks Rewards

You earn stars based on your method of payment. If you pay with a Starbucks Rewards card, you will receive 2 stars per dollar. If you pay with another method of payment, you will receive 1 star per dollar spent. While the Starbucks Rewards Stars are great, they lack significant flexibility. You can only redeem them for Starbucks products.

An alternative option is to use a different credit card for Starbucks purchases. From using our Merchant Category Lookup Tool, you will see that Starbucks purchases typically code on your statement as a restaurant purchase. This opens up a whole new avenue for maximizing the returns on your Starbucks purchases.

Using a credit card that is optimized for restaurant purchases to pay for your coffee can be a great way to maximize your returns and leverage every cent you spend towards reaching your next travel rewards goals. You can also double-dip by using this card to load your balance on your Starbucks Rewards card–earning the best rate on stars and the best rate on your credit card purchase.

Our Take

The Starbucks Rewards program has one of the least generous policies we have seen for when your earnings expire. Six months is a little stingy and leaves a lot to be desired. That being said, Starbucks coding as a restaurant in terms of credit card bonus categories is an excellent opportunity. There are lots of great options for you to leverage your Starbucks purchases for more valuable credit card rewards points.
